Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Mild to moderate pain, pressure and nasal congestion can occur after surgery. The level of discomfort varies from person to person.
Discomfort is often more noticeable in the first few days and then gradually eases. Use pain medication as directed by your surgeon. Severe or worsening pain should be reported to a doctor.
A protective nasal mask or splint is usually worn for about a week. Returning to work is often possible after one to two weeks, depending on recovery and the type of work. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting are usually avoided for four to six weeks, as directed by your surgeon.
It's worth noting that swelling is a normal part of the healing process, and the nose's final, refined shape settles in gradually - over about a year. That doesn't mean a year of pain; it simply means the finer details of the shape continue to come together as the tissue heals.
